Climbing Rappelling and Lowering
|
| Rappel Backups |
Artical
Number:28 |
| Overview: |
It is generally a good idea to use personal backups when rappelling, especially if the route or destination of the rappel is uncertain or unknown, and/or other non-routine situations.
Top and bottom belays are other ways to backup the rappel. |
Backup below the rappel device
This is generally the first choice for backups because it:
- Leaves the control hand free.
- Has to hold less weight and is less likely to lock up.
- Is less likely to catch on overhangs and obstructions.
- Is easy to loosen and continue rappelling.

Backup above the device
This may be appropriate in some circumstances where a backup below the device is not available or is not working well. It may be useful in specialized circumstances such as certain rescue applications. |
